This 48 sheet Hosho paper pad makes a great student sketch pad. Hosho paper is thick, strong, fluffy paper typically used for official documents, sketching and painting. While the Hosho name used to indicate it was a highly refined mulberry fiber paper, it now refers to the paper’s uses. It is still made of the principal fibres used in most Japanese papers and is noted for its length, strength and fineness.   It is acid-free and one side has a smooth finish while the reverse has a rough finish. It is a high-quality paper that is resistant to shrinkage and expansion.

This is excellent paper for marbling. This pad is ideal for practicing ink painting, block printing, gel  printing, linoleum prints, and brush strokes, and various drawing techniques using graphite, pastel and charcoal.   Printmakers prefer its absorbency, strength and versatility. This paper is not sized, so painters like it for ink, watercolor and lettering.  Hosho is also sometimes chosen for rubbing techniques. Because it is not sized, it is not suitable for ink writing and western calligraphy as it is too absorbent and will feather and bleed.
