Marbling is the ancient art of floating paints on thickened ("sized") water, then transferring the floating paint design onto paper or fabric. It is often employed as a writing surface for calligraphy, and especially book covers and endpapers in bookbinding and stationery. Part of its appeal is that each print is a unique design. Use this traditional technique to make your own patterned fabric, one-of-a-kind wrapping paper, greeting cards, fine art and more. Each design is as unique as a fingerprint! The Jacquard Marbling Kit is easy to use and gives professional-quality results.
The Jacquard marbling paints are fun and easy to use. They are water-based non-toxic paints that clean up simply with soap and water. The kit includes 6 marbling colours 14.79ml each: yellow, red, violet, blue, white and black, synthetic gall, alum (Mordant, carrageenan and comprehensive easy to follow instructions. You'll also need one or two shallow trays, paper towels, combs, hair picks, skewers for combing patterns into the colours, and paper or fabric for marbling.
Rice paper works beautifully with brilliant rich colours and a nice texture, although other papers such as the Reeves Visual Layflat visual pad work well also. Practice papers such as zeta paper and the Windsor & Newton marker papers also work. Papers may curl on drying; an iron applied with a cloth over the paper will flatten the papers.
All Jacquard’s Marbling Colors spread equally on the marbling size and produce the most intense colors possible. You can use any porous or semi-porous surface, including natural and synthetic fabrics, canvas, paper, wood, leather and more. On fabric, the Marbling Colors are soft to the touch and completely washfast after heat setting. On other porous and semi-porous surfaces, the paints have excellent adhesion.
